On this Date in Sports History (7/21/2001): Duval Captures Open Championship

On this day in Sports History, July 21, (7/21/2001):

Once Tiger Woods became the anointed King of the Links the search began for his Rival; the Frazier to his Ali. Phil, The Big Easy, Sergio all took their shot. Once upon a time that #1 contender role belonged to David Duval. In a span of 4 years, Duval would be SI Cover Boy, hold the #1 World Golf  ranking, and win 13 PGA events culminating with his only major victory, The Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s. What followed this coronation is not for the faint of heart. Personal issues, combined with back, wrist and shoulder injuries dropped Duval from the ranks of the elite to the point he lost his Tour Card. David vs. Tiger was over before it began. 14 years ago today. #TodayInSportsHistory #DavidDuval #BritishOpen
